Geraint
Hughes (left) is presented with a plaque by Phil Basford, Chairman of the
Dorset Youth Football League, after being voted county’s ‘Youth Manager
of the year’. What made the award even more remarkable was that the
Welshman, head of physical education at the Thomas Hardye School in
Dorchester, had earlier spurned a
career in football to play rugby for Dorchester.
As a fly-half, he was a
prolific drop-goal exponent and place kicker with a burst of pace which
often left the opposition’s wing-forwards to eat his dust. He was selected
to play for the Dorset and Wiltshire county rugby team and also turned out
at Twickenham in RFU’s county seven-a-side finals. These days he coaches
the Dorchester under-12s.
